Welcome to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ page). Below, we have tried to answer the most common questions visitors to our Web site may have. If you find that your question is not answered on this page, please e-mail us at info@houseofpeace.co.uk

WHAT IS TRANCE?

Trance is a natural altered state of consciousness that we all zone into several times during our waking hours. It’s when we temporarily “switch off” to gaze out of a window, only half listen to what is being said, dream about being on a beach while sitting on a tube or (more worryingly) while we are driving a car.

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS

Hypnosis is the act of deliberately accessing the trance state, either by oneself (self-hypnosis) or with a hypnotherapist.

WHY HYPNOTHERAPY

A hypnotist does stage acts for fun. A professionally trained hypnotherapist such a myself is bound by a strict code of ethics to be available to a client only for their positive benefit.  Hypnotherapy allows the client to access the natural trance state while listening to positive suggestions that will help them to solve their particular problem.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Trance is the bridge that links the conscious mind with the unconscious. If there is part of the unconscious responsible for a particular unwanted behaviour, the logical, conscious mind is incapable of fighting it. It’s like being at war with yourself. Hypnotherapy allows the client to understand where the battle is and how to negotiate a peace treaty

ADVANTAGES OF HYPNOTHERAPY

- drug-free, although you may need to ask for your doctor’s consent

  • - usually only 2 – 6 sessions needed
  • - client-led therapy – you are in charge
  • - -works with the consent of the unconscious – so many problems being the result of fighting against it.

WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY GOOD FOR?

WILL I STAY IN CONTROL?

Most people worry that their inner most secrets will be dragged out of them! Think of me as a guide and yourself as being at the helm.  If I guide you somewhere you don’t want to go, you don’t go.  If I say something to you inadvertently that you don’t like, your mind will reject it. If I ask you a question and you don’t want to answer, then you can work privately, and I can work blind. If a fire alarm went off, you would wake up and save yourself!

HOW MANY SESSIONS?

This is determined by the depth of the problem:  simple habits can be changed in one or two sessions if the client is willing. Problems with an emotional attachment will need investigation and so the treatment will take longer.

STAGE HYPNOSIS

I am not an entertainer. I am also bound by a strict code of conduct that forbids me to try anything you may have seen on the stage or TV.

The unconscious mind interprets words very literally, like a child.  You will notice that people who go on stage are very carefully selected – for their obedience. These people give out signals that they are in the mood for fun, to be obedient to whatever will be suggested without question in order to entertain their friends.

In the therapeutic session, all clients are given the freedom to explore their unconscious minds for literal, symbolic interpretations to their problems which they can then feed back into their rational, conscious minds.  This is a fantastic freedom that we don’t normally allow ourselves unless we are “drifting off” somewhere in an idle moment.

YOU’RE NOT GOING TO BRAINWASH ME, ARE YOU?

Hypnotherapy is about positive reinforcement for change, yes, but the unconscious automatically rejects anything that is against its own ethical code. All sessions are client led, and the trance stage is only entered into with the consent of the client, and is always a reinforcement of the counselling that has gone on before.

IS THERE ANYONE WHO CAN’T OR SHOULDN’T BE HYPNOTISED?

Hypnosis is contraindicated in psychotics, although it has never been proven that hypnosis per se can precipitate a psychosis.  If you are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you will already be in your own trance and will be sent home!

WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN’T GO INTO TRANCE?

Some people, especially initially, feel wide awake and alert throughout. As I always start off by asking permission of all parts, including the unconscious mind, then the therapeutic work is always carried out at the trance level required by the patient.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T HEAR/REMEMBER ANYTHING?

Some people experience very deep trance and others enjoy drifting in and out.  The unconscious mind hears and stores everything and acts on that which it deems appropriate and useful.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T WAKE UP?

As the unconscious hears everything, even a very deeply relaxed client will awaken eventually!

IS HYPNOSIS GOOD FOR CHILDREN?

Children drift in and out of trance all day, just like adults do, only more easily.  They will be asked to use their imagination and so they love it.

CAN I LEARN TO DO IT MYSELF?

You will be encouraged to make self-hypnosis part of your life from now on!

WHICH ARE THE BEST HYPNOTHERAPY ASSOCIATIONS?

There are many different associations which makes it confusing to know which are the best ones. I made my choice based on:

  • - the LCCH is rapidly growing and taking on more and more students across the country
  • - the LCCH course covered many different techniques and theories
  • - the BSCH trains doctors and health professionals, and when I took my exams, there was a medical doctor present as an examiner.

YES BUT BOTTOM LINE – DOES HYPNOTHERAPY WORK?

If you are in a rut, or you have some kind of problem and you can’t see a way out, then the chances are that you have conditioned yourself to stay with this problem, or are only looking at it from one perspective. Hypnotherapy allows you to change your thinking, and widen your choices. There is ALWAYS some form of therapeutic benefit from trance work!
